Global Warming

I've been bugging Benj and my mom to do their part in fighting against global warming. Now, it's time to bug all of you who reads my blog. :)

Browsing, I found this and this giving tips and things to do to stop global warming. Mostly are not applicable here in the Philippines, so I tweaked the list a bit.

  1. Replace a regular incandescent light bulb with a compact fluorescent light bulb (cfl).
  2. Avoid using AC, use the electric fan instead.
  3. Clean or replace filters on your air conditioner.
  4. Choose energy efficient appliances when making new purchases
  5. Do not leave appliances on standby. This includes the TV, mini-components, mobile phone charger, computer monitors, printers, etc.
  6. Move your fridge and freezer away from your oven or gas stoves. Placing these items next to it will consume more energy.
  7. Defrost old fridges and freezers regularly. Even better is to replace them with newer models, which all have automatic defrost cycles and are generally up to two times more energy-efficient than their predecessors.
  8. Cover your pots while cooking. Doing so can save a lot of the energy needed for preparing the dish.
  9. Use the washing machine or dishwasher only when they are full.
  10. Take a shower instead of a bath. Less water, less wastes.
  11. Use less hot water. Mainit naman sa Pilipinas, e.
  12. Use a clothesline instead of a dryer whenever possible. I think we Filipinos do this anyway.
  13. Be sure you’re recycling at home.
  14. Recycle your organic waste. Paano to? Suggestions please.
  15. Reuse your palstic shopping bag. Or better, bring a reusable bag to the mall. There are a lot of canvas bags available. It doesn't have to be Envirosax or Baggu as long as it serves its purpose. Although, it wouldn't hurt to be fashionable. ;)
  16. Reduce waste.
  17. Plant a tree. Challenge your company to sponsor tree planting projects.
  18. Buy locally grown and produced foods. Buy Pinoy products. Sorry, guilty here.
  19. Buy fresh foods instead of frozen. Frozen food uses 10 times more energy to produce.
  20. Buy organic foods as much as possible.
  21. Eat less meat. Methane is the second most significant greenhouse gas and cows are one of the greatest methane emitters. Their grassy diet and multiple stomachs cause them to produce methane, which they exhale with every breath. - I'm not sure if I can do this though. Hehe.
  22. Reduce the number of miles you drive by walking, biking, carpooling or taking mass transit wherever possible. This way, you save up on gas too.
  23. Start a carpool with your coworkers or classmates.
  24. Don't leave an empty roof rack on your car. Remove it if it it won't be used.
  25. Keep your car tuned up, drive carefully and do not waste fuel.
  26. When it is time for a new car, choose a more fuel efficient vehicle.
  27. Try telecommuting from home, if your company will allow.
  28. Fly less.
  29. Share this list! Forward my blog entry or republish of use the pdf form.

I am encouraging everyone to do their part. I must admit, I haven't done my share fully. But when I think of what can happen in the future, I'm definitely doing my part.
