BEIJING—American Michael Phelps remains on track for eight gold
medals in the Beijing Olympics after the United States on Monday won the
4x100-meter relay in record time.Phelps has already won two golds, just six away from surpassing Mark Spitz’s record of seven swimming golds at a single Olympics.
On Aug. 10, Phelps won the gold in the 400m individual medley in
world record time (4:03.84). Phelps beat rivals Laszlo Cseh and Ryan
Lochte, and lowered the world record for the eighth time.On Aug. 11, Phelps won another gold in the 4x100m free
relay. He posted an American record 47.51 on the lead-off leg and anchor
Jason Lezak came from behind as the United States bested favorites France in
a world record of 3:08.24.
